How To Stay Active During A River Cruise

River cruises are an excellent way to travel. Whether you are cruising down the Danube, Rhine, or Douro River, there is no denying the convenience of relaxing on a ship while being transported from one destination to the next.

While it is important to relax and unwind while on vacation, it is equally as important to make sure you are staying active. If you are someone who enjoys lounging on the sundeck but also likes to get up and move around, here are a few tips for staying active while on a river cruise.

Onboard Fitness Center

Almost all river cruise ships have a state-of-the-art onboard fitness facility. Here you can lift weights, ride a stationary bike, or do virtually any workout that you would typically do at home. Most fitness centers also have fantastic views, so you don’t have to feel like you are missing a minute of your vacation.

Onboard Activities

In addition to a fitness center, many ships will host group activities like yoga, water aerobics, or other group fitness classes for guests to enjoy. This is not only a great way to stay active, but it is also a great way to meet new people.


Biking is an excellent way to stay active while also exploring your destination. Most ships will have bikes for you to use so you can cycle around on your own. You can also join a guided biking tour of the destination with your fellow passengers.


Walking is the easiest way to stay active while on a river cruise. Whether you are on board or on land, you will be amazed at what you discover when walking. From quaint bars, shops, and restaurants at your port of call to the best views on the ship, walking is something you can do anytime, anywhere. Most ships also have a track that goes around the top deck so you can get your steps in while enjoying the view -- and possibly making some new friends.


Since you are traveling by river, activities like kayaking may be available to you at your port of call. Similar to biking, some ships will arrange a guided kayaking excursion so you can enjoy exploring your destination with a fresh perspective.
